m1L2: Belonging & k2tog

make1Left

Our second theme for @make1left is Belonging. The stitch is k2tog. (A note: we are happy to accept crafts other than knitting — any stitch that joins two together would be appropriate. We would love to hear your ideas.)⠀

Belonging is one of our deepest emotional needs. And as this quote from Brené Brown’s Braving the Wilderness captures, belonging is also about the self and solidarity. ⠀

“True belonging is the spiritual practice of believing in and belonging to yourself so deeply that you can share your most authentic self with the world and find sacredness in both being a part of something and standing alone in the wilderness. True belonging doesn’t require you to change who you are; it requires you to be who you are.”⠀

We strive for a space in which you can be your whole self. Belonging is at the heart of why our How and our Why are inseparable. Accessible, Cooperative, Experimental, and Sustainable is essential. ⠀

Here’s more of how we work with Designers to create Belonging. First we gather Designers for the issue. We find those designers not just from personal contacts but through our Collab List. We contact you about the theme and approximate dates, and if you accept, we brainstorm ideas for designs and group time frame. This is done both as a group and between the designer and the editors. ⠀

Next we begin the pattern writing process. We find yarn collaborations. We brainstorm solutions to design features. You have access to our tech editors before you write the pattern and assistance and advice if needed on how to proceed. And you also have access to other designers. We want our patterns to be accessible and size inclusive, and working together to achieve that is not only more efficient and supportive, it’s more sustainable.⠀

If you would like to be involved in our project in whatever capacity, please fill in our Collab Form. It’s an always Open Call for Collaborations. We have some really exciting collaborations evolving for issues 1 & 2 already. We would love to have more. ⠀

Until next time….⠀
