make1Left: What is Left?

make1Left

Since starting this project the one question I’ve gotten consistently is What is Left? And the double meaning of that question aside, I think it begins here:
I don’t know how to explain to you that you should care about other people.” ⠀
⠀
I saw this on IG and then Twitter. It turns out this line is the title of a 2017 HuffPo article (Link: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/i-dont-know-how-to-explain-to-you-that-you-should_b_59519811e4b0f078efd98440).

Chadwick writes, “I don’t know how to convince someone how to experience the basic human emotion of empathy….Our disagreement is not merely political, but a fundamental divide on what it means to live in a society, how to be a good person, and why any of that matters….I can’t debate someone into caring about what happens to their fellow human beings. The fact that such detached cruelty is so normalized in a certain party’s political discourse is at once infuriating and terrifying.”⠀
⠀
And while the article is talking about the US, this ideology exists everywhere. It’s the ideology of Nationalism and Right-wing Populism. It is the same ideology that brings us everything from the climate crisis, to unending war, from human trafficking, to Brexit.⠀
⠀
And it’s not just far-right policies and politics that are infuriating and terrifying, it’s the (White) Moderate. The detached cruelty that asks for civility in the face of genocide. It’s prioritizing animal rights over human rights. It’s wanting a t-shirt and not caring where it came from. It’s the insistence that they’d rather not discuss it — that they are not “political” — that we should “stick to our knitting.”⠀
⠀
So for me, it’s not that I don’t know HOW to explain to you that you should care about other people, it’s that I no longer want to waste my time. If you don’t get it by now, I don’t know if you ever will. Besides, it’s not what I’m here for. I’m here for what’s left.⠀
⠀
And what is left? Us. Those of us who are left are moving on — we’re moving together towards justice, forwards for equity, and along the way, we’re creating our joy.⠀
