The Personal is Political.

Why did I write to you last time about my son’s health + broken American healthcare system + our immigration story + political events all over the world + Toni Morrison’s death?⠀

Why did I write to you last time about my son’s health + broken American healthcare system + our immigration story + political events all over the world + Toni Morrison’s death?⠀
⠀
The short answer is the personal is political. This project is both personal and political. The ONE in @make1Left means both the self and in solidarity with others.⠀
⠀
The longer answer is that all of these things touch my life personally in different ways, to different degrees. ⠀

It’s not about centering myself in all of them, but rather centering myself in myself and my own work. ⠀

It’s about acknowledging my biases, weaknesses, needs, strengths, and resources, and it’s being honest with myself and with others about what else affects my work and my ability to work with others.⠀

Working cooperatively includes telling you where I am, not just in time and space, but in my headspace. And the news of more and more violence fucks with my headspace. ⠀

So last night I went looking for what bell hooks says about this quote in the photo. The personal is political. ⠀

What I found was an interesting conversation between her and Jill Soloway called: “Ending Domination: The Personal is Political.”

In this conversation they talk about all the ways in which we might each be affected by different kinds of domination. How we share commonalities. How our personal lives and our psychological health affect our work. ⠀

The link is here: https://youtu.be/Fw6Fd87PhjU. And tonight instead of watching again, I’m going to go to sleep “early.”⠀

Because self-accountability.⠀
