make1Left: Self-Accountability and Solidarity

The one in make1Left is both self-accountability (h/t @mia.mingus ) AND working together in community towards a common goal (solidarity).⠀

“If you have come to help me, you are wasting your time. If you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.”⠀
⠀
I first heard this quote from the Queensland Aboriginal activists group in Episode 9: The Big Question of the podcast “About Race with Reni Eddo-Lodge.”
⠀
Eddo-Lodge says that she is constantly asked by well-meaning white people the question: What can I do about racism?⠀
⠀
“Reni: well, I don’t know where you hold influence in your life. I don’t know your friends. I don’t know the extent of your jobs. I don’t know where you can assess where the institutional racism is really taking hold in your sector, what you as individuals can attempt to do to try and change that. I’m in no position to tell you how both of your lives can try and change the problem. I’ve spent many many years thinking about this, and fewer years writing about it, and i think i’ve done a decent job of assessing the problem. But in terms of where you hold influence in your lives? In order to attempt to overcome the problem, only you can diagnose that….It’s all about solidarity.”⠀
⠀
This project is also about solidarity. The one in make1Left is both self-accountability (h/t @mia.mingus ) AND working together in community towards a common goal (solidarity).⠀
⠀
I have received so many responses already both privately and to the google form that I’m overwhelmed and full of joy. But before we go further, I want to state with absolute clarity, that there is no justice, equity, pleasure, joy, or solidarity where there is hate.⠀
⠀
Hate has many faces, and NONE of them are welcome here. (Character limits keep me from listing them all.)⠀
⠀
I do not expect perfection. In fact, imperfection is one of the values of this zine. But I do expect empathy and accountability. (Accountability is an act of compassion.)⠀
⠀
So to end with the quote from the Queensland Aboriginal activists group, “If you have come to help me, you are wasting your time. If you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.”⠀
